Hybrid barges for river tourism
Sustainable river tourism with cutting-edge technology.
AISTER delivers LA DEMOISELLE and LA CHARENTE, two hybrid passenger vessels designed for tourist transport in western France. Their design pays homage to the traditional barges of the Charente River while offering a fully eco-friendly propulsion system.
Technical specifications
Aluminium Vessel with Hybrid Propulsion: Sustainability and Efficiency
These vessels represent a significant step forward in sustainable river navigation. With a length of 20 metres and a beam of 4.45 metres, the hull is constructed entirely from marine-grade aluminium, ensuring lightness, strength and durability.
One of the most notable features is the hybrid propulsion system, which allows for complete routes to be undertaken in 100% electric mode, eliminating emissions during normal operation.
The energy system has been optimised to offer between 4 and 5 hours of autonomy in full-electric mode, which is more than sufficient for the planned routes. When required, the vessel can switch to an auxiliary diesel engine to guarantee full operational capability in any circumstance.
Onboard Comfort and Tourist Equipment for River Routes
Designed for comfort during sightseeing tours, the barges accommodate up to 69 passengers (one PRM), and are equipped with Wi-Fi, PRM access (Persons with Reduced Mobility), bike storage, and all necessary amenities for journeys of up to one and a half hours, three times daily.
The interior and exterior design is inspired by the historic Charente River barges, traditionally used for transporting spirits. Wooden finishes evoke the region’s heritage while seamlessly integrating modern technology, creating a balance between tradition and sustainability.
A Tourism Project on the Charente River
These vessels have been built for the Department of Charente and the Grand Cognac Agglomeration Community, located in western France. Their purpose is to promote river tourism in this region of Nouvelle-Aquitaine, renowned for its landscapes, vineyards, and the production of the famous Cognac.
The barges will operate on tourist routes along the Charente River, an area of significant cultural and scenic value. Their unique design aims to blend into the local environment and reinforce the region’s identity while providing visitors with an environmentally responsible experience.
AISTER and the Construction of Sustainable River Tourism Vessels
For AISTER, this project marks another milestone in its commitment to sustainability and technological innovation. Since building the “Juan de Homar” in 2011—one of Spain’s first 100% electric boats—environmentally friendly design has been a strategic pillar of the company’s growth.
The delivery of these hybrid barges consolidates over a decade of experience in electric navigation. The technical challenge of designing vessels capable of operating entirely in electric mode for extended periods has been successfully met, thanks to the efforts of AISTER’s technical team and collaboration with the French design office SDI.
This project also strengthens the international presence of the Galician shipyard, expanding its reach into European markets committed to responsible tourism. The Charente hybrid barges are a clear example of AISTER’s dedication to environmental protection, innovation, and excellence in shipbuilding.
